Maltese, especially puppies, should have their own resting area. This is the “safe zone“. Only approved puppy toys, bedding, puppy pads, food and water dispenser should be inside this area.
Puppies can be very energetic, however they will also need their rest. Once they are done playing, place them inside their resting area, whether it is a playpen or a small room.
This area is also important because if you are not watching your puppy, they can eat things they are not supposed to. So this is another important reason why you should have a closed off area for your dog.
Puppy pads can be a source for play and that means they will rip it to shreds and can even eat pieces of it. You will want to consider a pad holder that avoids the puppy from taking it out. Little by little they will not find it a play thing as they get older, but when they are puppies most will find it a challenging game… “How can I get the puppy pad out and rip it!” See our recommendation below…
There are many types of beddings available. Some are cheap or just decorative, however what you should be looking for is a bed that can be easily washed over and over again. Lets face it… the puppy will get it’s bed stinky or dirty. Sometimes it is best to pay a little more and have a dog bed that will last a long time and that you can keep clean, rather than one you will be throwing away quickly.

Examples of playpens to consider
The Zampa playpen is used mostly for when you are going out (I LOVE IT!!!). It is very easy to move around and weighs very little, but I don’t recommend it as an “everyday playpen” because your puppy can get bored and chew it.
We hope this information is helpful.
