CANINE VACCINES

Vaccination is an important part of helping your pet stay healthy.

What Diseases Can I Vaccinate Against?

DA2PP (Core) – DA2PP (sometimes called DHPP) is the core/basic vaccine for dogs. It prevents distemper, adenovirus type 2 (hepatovirus), parvovirus, and parainfluenza. These diseases are very serious and easily transmitted. We highly recommend all dogs be vaccinated with DA2PP.

Symptoms of Distemper:

  • High fever
  • Eye inflammation
  • Eye/nose discharge
  • Labored breathing, coughing
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Hardening of nose and feet
  • Serious neurological symptoms
  • 50% Mortality in adult dogs
  • 80% Mortality in puppies

Symptoms of Parainfluenza

  • Coughing
  • Low-grade fever
  • Nasal discharge
  • Lethargy
  • Anorexia
  • 35% mortality

Symptoms of Adenovirus – 2

  • Dry, hacking cough
  • Retching and gagging
  • Foaming at the mouth
  • Fever
  • Nasal discharge
  • Fatal in puppies, older dogs

Symptoms of Parvovirus

  • Severe, bloody diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Anorexia
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • 15% mortality

Bordetella (Kennel Cough) – Bordetella is also known as “kennel cough” or “dog flu.” Though it is not usually fatal in healthy, adult dogs, it can be fatal in puppies, older dogs, and immunodeficient dogs. By vaccinating your healthy, adult dog, you are helping to prevent the spread of highly contagious Bordetella and helping to protect puppies and older dogs. If your dog ever comes in contact with other dogs (at daycare, grooming, walks, or at dog parks) or if you live in a pet-friendly building that has common areas where other pets sometimes walk or dwell, we highly recommend vaccinating against Bordetella.

Leptospirosis – Leptospirosis is a disease transmitted through infected fecal matter or urine. Most commonly, pets will drink puddle water or runoff that is contaminated. If your pet, like most in Vancouver, drinks from puddle water or licks rainwater off their paws after walks, we highly recommend vaccinating against Leptospirosis.

Symptoms of Leptospirosis:

  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Anorexia
  • Lethargy
  • Blood in urine
  • 10% mortality

Lyme – Lyme disease is caught from tick bites. Pets who are exposed to woody areas or lots of other wild or domesticated animals that may have ticks should be vaccinated against Lyme disease.

Sypmtoms of Lyme Disease:

  • Fever
  • Anorexia
  • Lethargy
  • Lameness
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling of joints
  • Possibility of death

Rabies – Rabies is an awful, highly fatal neurological disease. Humans have a 100% mortality rate when infected with rabies, and it is transmissible before symptoms begin.
